Macaulay Culkin has surprised fans by revealing his own idea for a sequel to ‘Home Alone’, completely flipping the original concept.
More than three decades after the release of ‘Home Alone’, Macaulay Culkin remains inseparable from Kevin McCallister, one of the most iconic characters in Christmas cinema. And although the actor only starred in two films of the saga — the 1990 original and ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ — he has repeatedly acknowledged that he isn’t closed off to playing the mischievous trap-setting genius again. Now, during his ‘A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin’ tour, the actor has gone a step further and shared what would be his own version of a third instalment.
Culkin admitted he wouldn’t be “allergic” to returning to the franchise, so long as the project was “the right one”. And, in fact, he has already imagined a full concept: this time Kevin wouldn’t be defending the house… he would be trying to get into it. “I’m either a widower or a divorcé, I’m raising a child and I’m not paying him enough attention. I get locked out and my own kid won’t let me in… he’s the one setting the traps,” he explained during the event.
In his proposal, the house would act as a metaphor for the relationship between Kevin and his son, in an emotional arc centred on “winning the child’s heart back”. A concept that aligns with the family spirit of the two original films, which — beyond the slapstick and over-the-top hits — always revolved around appreciating loved ones.
Although the franchise has continued without him through several sequels and spin-offs, none has matched the cultural impact of the first two instalments. Culkin himself revealed in 2024 that he was offered a cameo in one of the later films, but he declined. He admitted he had ideas for a potential return, though not the time to write a script due to his family life with Brenda Song and their two children.
What he has done, however, are brief returns to the character: the most recent being the ‘Home, But Not Alone’ campaign for Home Instead, where he appeared as an adult Kevin adapting the iconic house to protect his mother. A touching nod that shows that, even as time passes, Kevin McCallister remains alive in the collective imagination.
Will Culkin’s version ever become a reality? No one knows, but his idea — tender, nostalgic and completely reversed — could be the perfect reinvention for a saga that continues to be part of the Christmas DNA.
