Moana 2 dominates the box office with a record-breaking $221 million USD debut, surpassing Wicked and Gladiator II in a historic weekend.

Disney has done it again. ‘Moana 2’, the highly anticipated sequel to the hit Polynesian animated film, has cemented itself as a box office phenomenon by grossing $221 million USD during its opening weekend.

This impressive feat breaks the previous record set by ‘Frozen II’ in 2019, which earned $125 million USD, and surpasses ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ from 2013, which collected $109 million USD. Furthermore, it ranks as the highest five-day debut in history, even outpacing 2023’s ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie.’ In just three days, Moana 2 also recorded the best opening for Walt Disney Animation.

Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman, stated, “This is a moment to celebrate, and we’re thankful to all the moviegoers and fans who’ve made this record-breaking debut possible.”

The film faced tough competition from other major releases like Universal’s adaptation of ‘Wicked’ and Paramount’s epic drama ‘Gladiator II’. Together, these productions amassed approximately $422 million USD during the weekend, with Wicked securing the second spot at $117.5 million USD. Disney once again leads the way in animation and entertainment.
