A battle without rules, 292 warriors, and a new “monster” storm into Netflix’s most brutal Japanese series this autumn.
Netflix has just released the official trailer for ‘Last Samurai Standing’, a Japanese action series set during the Meiji period that promises to take the battle royale concept to a whole new level. Based on Ikusagami, the acclaimed novel by Naoki Prize-winning author Imamura Shogo, the six-episode series will premiere on the platform on 13 November.
Directed by Michihito Fujii, the story begins at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple, where 292 warriors gather to take part in a blood-soaked, desperate competition. Each receives a wooden tag, and to claim the coveted cash prize they must steal their rivals’ tags and make it to Tokyo alive.
The protagonist, Shujiro Saga (played by Junichi Okada), is driven by a powerful motive: to earn the money needed to help his sick wife and child. But survival won’t come easily. Arrows, daggers, giant swords, and fragile alliances emerge across a battlefield where every decision could mean death.
The trailer also introduces a new character already stirring excitement: Gentosai Okabe, portrayed by Hiroshi Abe. With his commanding presence, white hair, and almost supernatural aura, his enemies know him simply as “the monster.” His arrival threatens to shatter the fragile balance among the competitors, adding a layer of fear and unpredictability to every clash.
With its cinematic aesthetic, relentless pace, and emotional undercurrent that adds depth to the spectacle, ‘Last Samurai Standing’ stands out as one of Netflix’s most anticipated action releases of the year. The countdown has begun.
