The DEA has joined the investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death, while authorities await an official determination of the cause.

  • The investigation into the unexpected death of Hayden Panettiere has taken a new turn following the involvement of the US drug enforcement agency.

The death of Hayden Panettiere remains under investigation. Just days after news broke that the Heroes and Nashville actress had died at the age of 36, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has joined the inquiry, according to ABC News and Variety.

The agency will work alongside the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina and the local coroner’s office to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. At present, an official cause of death has not been determined, and authorities have not disclosed exactly what prompted the DEA’s involvement.

This point is particularly important: the participation of the drug enforcement agency does not in itself establish that drugs were responsible for her death. The investigation remains ongoing, and the findings of the forensic examination will ultimately determine what happened.

Police found no evidence of criminal activity

Panettiere was found unresponsive on Sunday and pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services attempted to assist her. Greenville Police later said that their preliminary investigation had found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

According to Variety, emergency services communications initially obtained by People reportedly included references to a possible “overdose” and “cardiac arrest”. Neither has been established as the actress’s official cause of death.

Panettiere had spoken publicly over the years about her struggles with alcohol and other substances, experiences she addressed again in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published earlier this year.

Hollywood continues to pay tribute to Hayden Panettiere

As the investigation continues, friends and former colleagues have been remembering the actress. Jack Coleman, who played her father in Heroes, shared an emotional tribute recalling the bond they had maintained since filming the series’ pilot episode two decades ago.

Sam Palladio, Panettiere’s Nashville co-star, also shared a heartfelt farewell. He recalled admiring the actress before he had even met her and remembered the generosity she showed him when he first arrived in the United States.

“You were generous, wise beyond your years and lit up every room with your star,” the actor wrote, adding that much of the success enjoyed by those who appeared in the series was due to Hayden’s “brilliance and magnetism”. “Rest now and be free,” he concluded.

The DEA’s involvement now opens a new phase in an investigation that continues to raise questions. Until the forensic examinations are completed, any connection between Hayden Panettiere’s death and substance use remains only a hypothesis and not a confirmed fact.
