The new Biarritz International Film Festival has had a spectacular start. The budding film festival will welcome Penélope Cruz as the guest of honor in its first edition, and the Oscar-winning actress will present a screening of her film “On the Outskirts” before its release in France.
Cruz not only stars but also produced the film, which received numerous nominations for the Goya Awards—the Spanish version of the Oscars—for director Juan Diego Botto, co-stars Luis Tosar, Christian Checa, and a mention for Cruz herself.
The Chanel ambassador will also participate in a public session following the screening. The story focuses on the intertwined lives of people on the brink of losing their homes, the lawyer trying to help them, and the impact it has on his family. The film will be released in France on July 5.
The Biarritz International Film Festival presents itself as the first international film festival focused on “youth stories.” Being youthful itself, the festival was launched this year under the direction of its founder, Jérôme Pulis, former director of international communications for Christian Dior Parfums.

For the festival’s award, all members of the main jury are under 35 years old, while a second jury is composed of film school students.
The jury features several popular American stars, including “Daisy Jones & The Six” actress Camila Morrone, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” lead Noah Centineo, and “We Are Who We Are” actress Francesca Scorsese, daughter of legendary director Martin Scorsese.
Among the French jury members are “The Three Musketeers” star Lyna Khoudri, “No Time to Die” actor Dali Benssalah, and dancer and Jacquemus model Leo Walk.
Iranian director Saeed Roustaee serves as the jury president. His film “Leila’s Brothers” won the International Film Critics’ Prize at Cannes last year.
The film festival will open today and run until Sunday in the French coastal city of Biarritz. Penélope Cruz named guest of honor at the Biarritz International Film Festival.
