Sabrina Carpenter will star in and produce a musical inspired by ‘Alice in Wonderland’, directed by Lorene Scafaria.
Sabrina Carpenter is taking her musical talent and theatrical charisma to a new stage: ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The singer and actress will headline and produce a musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s literary classic, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. The film will be written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, best known for the hit ‘Hustlers’, and produced by Universal Pictures.
Unlike the many Disney versions, this reinterpretation of Alicia’s universe will be entirely separate from the previous animated or live-action films. Described as a “personal passion project” for Carpenter, it promises a fresh vision of Wonderland, blending original music, contemporary aesthetics, and a pop-infused perspective true to the artist’s style.
Sources close to the production reveal that Carpenter arrived at the studio with a lookbook and a creative proposal developed by herself. Her connection to the character is far from new: in 2015, she celebrated her birthday with an Alice in Wonderland-themed party, and in 2020, she even prepared a musical version titled ‘Alice’ for Netflix, set during a festival called Wonderland, though it was never produced.
Now, that creative dream is materialising under Universal’s banner. While it’s not yet known whether the film will keep the festival concept or take an entirely different direction, fans already consider it one of Carpenter’s most anticipated projects.
The artist, who recently topped the charts with ‘Espresso’ and ‘Please Please Please’, previously told Variety about her wish to return to acting after years focused on music: “I never wanted to step away from acting, but so many scripts felt the same. I was waiting for something that truly inspired me.”
