Sanrio and Netflix launch a stop-motion series of ‘My Melody & Kuromi’ this summer, celebrating their anniversaries with adventures in the handcrafted world of ‘Mariland.

Sanrio has announced its collaboration with Netflix for a new stop-motion series featuring two of its most beloved characters: My Melody and Kuromi. Set to debut this summer, the series promises to strike a nostalgic chord with fans worldwide.

My Melody, debuting in 1975, and Kuromi, her self-proclaimed rival who arrived in 2005, continue to be immensely popular among Sanrio fans. While My Melody is known for her cheerful nature, love for her younger brother, and passion for baking, Kuromi is portrayed as a mischievous rebel, remaining among Sanrio’s top three characters in 2024.

Director Tomoki Misato, who will lead the project, celebrates the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, marking a significant milestone for both characters. Misato expressed his excitement for the project, which aims to push the boundaries of stop-motion animation, and highlighted the creation of a handcrafted world called ‘Mariland,’ where the characters will embark on thrilling adventures.

The series will be the first stop-motion animation from the studio ‘Toruku’ and is set to premiere on Netflix in July 2025, with a script written by Shuko Nemoto.
