Trump’s tariffs drive the rise of luxury replicas on TikTok, challenging high prices and conventional fashion.
Amid Donald Trump’s trade war, tariffs have sparked a wave of reactions on platforms like TikTok. Chinese manufacturers have begun promoting luxury versions of famous products, such as Hermes and Louis Vuitton bags, at significantly lower prices. This has sparked a viral conversation among users, who see these replicas as a way to avoid the high costs imposed by tariffs.
Derek Guy, a fashion writer, points out that “the claims can be tempting because they contain a grain of truth,” but warns that people do not fully understand how luxury production works. “Factories are not interchangeable warehouses. They have multiple clients and can produce different products at the same time,” explains Guy. Furthermore, many TikTok videos avoid stating that the replicas are identical to the originals, even though they highlight the price difference and the similar appearance.
Jesica Wagstaff, a fashion blogger, adds that these videos have fed “status anxiety,” especially during times of economic instability. The feeling of getting a bargain and “getting back at Trump” has driven many to consider replicas as a valid option. However, the lack of awareness about the production process leaves many vulnerable to hasty decisions.
