Troye Sivan stars in the upcoming HBO series, The Idol. Although Sivan has previous experience in acting, his role in The Idol marked a shift for him.
“It was the first time in my life that I really felt like an actor,” he told Elle in a new interview. “I have my day job of being a musician, and then when something exciting comes up that I’m interested in or that challenges me, which is pretty much everything to do with acting, I’m so excited to throw my hat in the ring and see what happens without this stress and pressure.”

Sivan plays Caleb, who is a friend of Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose Depp) in the series. Although Jocelyn and Caleb are close in the show, it also seems to be the case with the actors in real life. “There was not a single time where it was my close-up or someone else’s close-up, where she wasn’t behind the camera giving 1,000 percent after she’s just already given 1,000 percent on her coverage and knocked it out of the park,” he said in admiration for Depp’s work ethic. “She’s an incredible person to work with, so I feel very lucky to have her in my life.”
Sivan previously spoke about what makes The Idol so unique. “There are so many musicians on this project, I think it’s really real,” he told Interview magazine. “I love being informed, and fortunately or unfortunately, I feel like I’ve met most of these characters in real life. The Idol is completely crazy, but so is the music industry.”
The Idol premieres on HBO on June 4th.
