Vivienne Westwood hosts its first-ever fashion show in India, paying tribute to the country’s rich textile heritage. However, the collection has divided critics and fans.
Vivienne Westwood made history by presenting its first fashion show in India, choosing Mumbai’s iconic Gateway as the backdrop, the same venue where Dior showcased its collection in 2023. In collaboration with the Department of Textiles of the Maharashtra government and the Vivz Fashion School, the brand aimed to honour the country’s deep-rooted textile traditions.

The show marks another step in Westwood’s evolving relationship with India, following its recent ‘Sun‘ campaign, shot in Mumbai with Kshitij Kankaria. The location choice was also influenced by the CEO’s visit to India last year and Vivienne Westwood’s own travels to Goa in the 1970s.

The presentation featured Spring/Summer 2025 looks alongside archive pieces and an exclusive haute couture capsule crafted with handwoven Chanderi silks and Khadi cotton. The latter, popularised by Mahatma Gandhi in 1918, symbolises freedom and resistance in India. Materials were sourced from leading textile houses such as Khadi India and Aaranya.

Despite its tribute to Indian craftsmanship, the collection received mixed reactions. Its muted tones of sky blue, white, and sand were criticised for not fully embodying the rebellious and punk-inspired ethos that defines Westwood’s legacy.
