Kate Middleton makes a public appearance and reveals the emotional struggles following cancer, highlighting how challenging the recovery process after treatment can be.
After months away from the public eye, the Princess of Wales, 43, has reappeared, offering a moving account of her battle with cancer and the difficult road to recovery. She recently visited Colchester Hospital in Essex, where she shared personal experiences with patients and medical staff after completing her cancer treatment.
During her visit, Middleton acknowledged that although finishing treatment marks a hopeful milestone, the period that follows can be just as, if not more, challenging. “You put on a brave face during treatment, you stay stoic. Then it ends and you think you can get back to normal, but actually, that next phase is really, really hard,” the visibly emotional Princess said.
Kate Middleton was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024 and publicly announced her chemotherapy treatment in March of the same year. Since then, she has kept a low profile, focusing on her recovery and her family. In September 2024, she confirmed that she had completed chemotherapy, and in January 2025, she announced that she was in remission.
Although she has gradually resumed her official duties, Middleton did not attend Royal Ascot on 18 June—a highly anticipated event where she was expected to appear alongside Prince William. Sources close to the British royal family stated that although she was disappointed to miss it, she continues to prioritise her health and aims to return to her royal duties in a balanced and sustainable way.
During her tour of the hospital, the Princess of Wales took part in the planting of the new “Catherine’s Rose,” a flower named in her honour by the Royal Horticultural Society. Proceeds from the sale of this rose will go to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, a charity linked to the hospital where Kate received her care.
In further remarks, Middleton pointed out that the post-treatment adjustment period is complex and emotionally demanding: “You’re no longer under the care of the medical team, but you can’t just go back to life as it was. Having someone to guide you through that stage is vital. You have to find a new normal—and that takes time. It’s not a straight line, it’s a rollercoaster.”
The Princess of Wales, known for her commitment to emotional wellbeing and mental health, has long championed the therapeutic power of nature. According to those close to her, spending time outdoors was a key part of her healing process. Colchester Hospital’s wellbeing garden—where the planting took place—was designed with this restorative approach in mind, in collaboration with award-winning landscaper Adam Frost and NHS staff.
Middleton’s appearance marks a significant step in her gradual return to public life. She is expected to take part next week in the official welcome of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during their State Visit to the United Kingdom.
With her testimony, Kate Middleton not only sheds light on the challenges of facing a serious illness, but also offers a message of hope and empathy to millions going through similar journeys. Her example strengthens her role as a key figure in the British monarchy and as a symbol of personal resilience.
