The ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ actress opens up about being almost blind in one eye for ten years, reflecting on health, fame and cosmetic surgery rumours.

Anne Hathaway may be experiencing one of the most celebrated chapters of her career, but behind the red carpets and major Hollywood premieres lies a deeply personal struggle she has kept private for years. The actress has revealed that she lived for almost a decade with severe vision loss that left her nearly blind in her left eye — an experience she says completely changed the way she views life.

The actress, currently back at the centre of cultural conversation thanks to ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and her highly anticipated role as Penelope in ‘The Odyssey’, the new film directed by Christopher Nolan, recently opened up about a serious medical issue that quietly shaped much of her adult life.

Speaking on a recent The New York Times podcast, Hathaway explained that the condition began in her early thirties and progressively worsened, without her fully realising the extent of its impact on both her physical wellbeing and emotional state.

“I didn’t realise how serious it had become until I could finally see the full picture,” the actress admitted, reflecting on years spent adapting to severe visual limitations while maintaining an intensely demanding career.

According to Hathaway, her sight deteriorated to the point where she became legally blind in her left eye, ultimately requiring surgery to restore her vision. She linked the condition to premature cataracts, an uncommon diagnosis at her age that also began affecting her nervous system and emotional balance.

“I didn’t realise how much it was actually affecting my nervous system,” she explained, reflecting on the psychological and physical toll of those years.

Rather than focusing solely on hardship, Hathaway also expressed deep gratitude for modern medicine. She acknowledged feeling fortunate to live in a time where corrective surgery was possible and effective. “I think a lot about how, two generations ago, this might not have been an option for someone like me,” she said.

The experience radically shifted her perspective on something as ordinary as eyesight. “I appreciate being able to see because every day I wake up and can see the way I do feels like a miracle,” Hathaway confessed, in one of the most intimate revelations of her recent career.

The actress also used the moment to address another topic surrounding her public image in recent months: speculation about alleged cosmetic surgery. After becoming the focus of repeated commentary around her appearance, Hathaway publicly pushed back against assumptions and misinformation.

“We’re living in a moment where people feel very confident assuming what they believe is automatically fact,” she said, admitting she hesitated before speaking out but ultimately felt compelled to stop narratives driven by speculation rather than truth.
