Richard Gere and Diana Silvers star in ‘Asymmetry’, a literary adaptation about a secret relationship that changes the lives of its characters.

Richard Gere and Diana Silvers are already working together on ‘Asymmetry’, one of the romantic films expected to generate the most conversation in the coming months. The Golden Globe-winning actor, 76, and the 28-year-old actress were seen filming several scenes for the movie in New York, bringing to life a story shaped by unexpected connection, desire, literature and the age gap between its protagonists.

The day of filming took place in the American city, with both actors shooting a scene in a park. Richard Gere appeared wearing a white button-up shirt and jeans, while Diana Silvers wore a multicoloured dress with a leaf print. In the images from the set, the two performers can be seen sitting on a bench, holding hands and staying close to one another, anticipating the intimate and emotional tone the film is expected to have.

‘Asymmetry’ tells the story of Alice, a young editorial assistant in New York played by Diana Silvers, who one day crosses paths in Central Park with Ezra, a world-famous 70-year-old author played by Richard Gere. A simple moment of eye contact sparks a connection that completely transforms both of their lives and leads them to create a private world, separate from rules, expectations and outside judgement.

The premise places the film within the territory of an age-gap romance, but also within a broader reflection on vulnerability, creative ambition and the bonds that emerge at unexpected moments. Ezra, known for his bold work and a career defined by literary prestige, finds in Alice someone with whom he can show himself in a more honest and fragile way. She, in turn, discovers the courage she needs to explore her own aspirations as a writer.

That balance between admiration, desire and personal growth will be one of the major pillars of ‘Asymmetry’. The relationship between the characters is not presented solely as a romantic story, but as an experience that changes the way both of them see themselves. However, the intimate universe they create together is threatened when their secret relationship is exposed and both are forced to face the consequences.

The film is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Lisa Halliday, published in 2018 and received as one of the most talked-about literary phenomena of that year. The book was described by The New Yorker as “a literary phenomenon” and was also included by The New York Times among the books by women shaping the way we read and write fiction in the 21st century. Barack Obama also included it on his list of the best books of 2018, further strengthening its cultural impact.

The film adaptation will be directed by Edward Zwick, a filmmaker with a long career in emotionally charged dramas. Zwick has also worked on the screenplay alongside Lisa Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz, suggesting an adaptation especially attentive to the literary spirit of the original work. The author’s own involvement in the writing process adds weight to the project and raises expectations among readers of the novel.

For Richard Gere, ‘Asymmetry’ marks another return to romantic drama, a genre that has been an essential part of his career. Although his name remains associated with iconic titles such as ‘Pretty Woman’, the actor has shown over the decades a particular ability to play complex, elegant and emotionally restrained characters. In this new project, his role as Ezra seems to make the most of precisely that interpretative maturity.
