Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz reunite on the big screen in ‘Day Drinker’, a new film blending thriller, crime and mystery in a setting where escape seems virtually impossible: the open sea. Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for the project, directed by Marc Webb, teasing a story filled with secrets, revenge and characters whose true intentions are difficult to decipher.
The story begins aboard a private yacht, where Madelyn Cline’s character works as a bartender. Her routine changes when she meets a mysterious grey-haired passenger played by Depp. What initially appears to be a chance encounter soon draws her into an increasingly dangerous situation.
At the centre of the conflict is Penélope Cruz, who plays a powerful and ruthless figure connected to the criminal underworld. Her arrival pulls the protagonists into a far darker plot than they could have anticipated, transforming an apparently idyllic voyage into an unsettling game of threats and unfinished business.
The first trailer deliberately keeps many of the film’s mysteries intact. Depp introduces the story by questioning the very nature of what is unfolding: “My story? Perhaps it’s a tale of revenge. Or perhaps something worse. What if all of this is a ghost story? Or maybe I’m just another day drinker?”
That ambiguity appears to be one of the defining elements of ‘Day Drinker’. Its title refers to the act of drinking alcohol during the day, but here it also serves as a clue to a protagonist about whom very little has yet been revealed.
The film also marks a significant new big-screen project for Madelyn Cline following the conclusion of Outer Banks. The actress shares the spotlight with two established Hollywood stars in a production that aims to combine psychological suspense with a striking visual atmosphere shaped by the ocean, isolation and the sense that danger could be hiding anywhere.
