Camila Mendes is set to star in and produce ‘Upgraded 2’, the sequel to her popular 2024 romantic comedy, with filming beginning in Italy this October.
Camila Mendes is officially returning to the world of romantic comedies. The 32-year-old actress, best known for her role in Riverdale, is preparing to reprise her character in ‘Upgraded 2‘, the sequel to the 2024 film that became a popular choice among Prime Video viewers. The exciting announcement also marks a new professional milestone for the star, who will take on a producing role alongside her return to the screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming for Upgraded 2 will begin in Italy in October 2026, introducing a new European setting to the romantic comedy franchise. Although the storyline remains under wraps, the confirmation has already generated excitement among fans eager to discover what happens next.
The sequel will reunite several members of the original creative team. Luke Roberts and Justin Matthews, who wrote the first film, are returning to develop the screenplay, while Becca Gleason will direct the new instalment. Production companies Honor Role and Gulfstream Pictures will oversee the project.
The original Upgraded, released on Prime Video in February 2024, introduced audiences to Ana, an ambitious young intern working at a prestigious art auction house. Played by Mendes, Ana unexpectedly finds herself travelling to London in first class, setting off a series of misunderstandings that completely transform her professional and romantic life.
During the journey, she meets William, portrayed by Archie Renaux, who mistakenly believes she is her influential boss, Claire, played by Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei. Rather than immediately correcting the misunderstanding, Ana allows the confusion to continue, leading to an unexpected romance filled with complicated decisions and charming moments.
The film combined fashion, romance, ambition and humour, creating an appealing story set against the glamorous backdrop of the international art world. Its reception was also positive among critics, earning a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 51 reviews.
For Camila Mendes, the sequel represents another opportunity to expand her career beyond the teenage drama that first brought her international recognition. Since rising to fame as Veronica Lodge in Riverdale, the actress has continued to explore different genres while establishing herself as a leading name in contemporary romantic comedies.
Her involvement as a producer on Upgraded 2 also highlights her growing influence behind the camera, allowing her to participate more closely in the creative development of the project.
