June is approaching, Pride month, and many brands and designers are already releasing their special collections to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. Adidas has announced its exclusive partnership with South African queer designer Rich Mnisi for the launch of the “Let Love Be Your Legacy” collection.
This collection, which combines fashion and functionality, will consist of clothing and footwear that promote freedom of expression in all sports spaces. It is inspired by a love letter that Mnisi wrote to his younger self. “The collection is a manifestation for active alliance and empowerment of the LGBTQ+ community”, explains Adidas.
“In creating this collection, I had a strong urge to speak to my inner child and express to the world how LGBTQ+ alliance can create a legacy of love. Unifying these themes through my own visual language and Adidas’ iconic performance and lifestyle pieces is a powerful combination that turns the collection into a symbol of self-acceptance and LGBTQ+ advocacy. My hope is that this range inspires allies of the LGBTQ+ community to further advocate for queer individuals they love and not let them fight alone for acceptance”, said Rich Mnisi.
The collaboration includes exclusive designs from Adidas Originals, football, cycling, sportswear, and swimwear. Within the color palette, we will find slogans such as “Love Unites” and “Let Love Be Your Legacy” printed on the fabric with vibrant colors. Additionally, the clothing and footwear feature Mnisi’s retro graphic print, a design of circular monochromatic patterns with layers of hand-drawn flowers and abstract shapes in bright colors. The Adidas three stripes are accentuated in red and pink.
Furthermore, the collection is partly made with recycled materials and in collaboration with Better Cotton. As part of its commitment to making sports more inclusive, Adidas continues its partnership with the non-profit organization Athlete Ally, which works to end homophobia and transphobia in sports.
Adidas x Rich Mnisi is now available on the Adidas website, in stores, and through the Adidas app.
