Halle Bailey as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” was a big win for Black girls around the world, but the fact that she could keep her natural dreadlocks sends an even bigger message to Black women and girls.
In an interview with Ebony, she revealed how important it was for her to keep her hair in its natural state for the movie remake. In the film, Halle maintains the iconic red hair that Ariel was known for, but instead opted for a coppery red color. “I was grateful to [director] Rob Marshall because he wanted to keep my dreadlocks. It’s always important to have someone who has your back,” Halle told Ebony.
Halle Bailey continued to say that she wanted to keep Ariel’s red hair because it’s an integral part of her character, but she admired the fact that she is a Black woman with dreadlocks and wanted to bring that part of herself into Ariel’s appearance.
Hairstylist Camille Friend was the mastermind behind her dyed locks for the film, which resulted in pure magic.
