Tom Holland has officially announced that he will take a year off from acting after the release of his new series on Apple TV+, The Crowded Room.
The Crowded Room is a psychological thriller in which Holland portrays Danny Sullivan. The story is inspired by a 1981 non-fiction novel titled The Minds of Billy Milligan, written by Daniel Keys. The series heavily focuses on mental health and shows how Danny Sullivan deals with the aftermath of his arrest for involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. His past is revealed throughout the series through the interrogator Rya Goodwin, played by Amanda Seyfried. In a recent interview with ExtraTV, Holland discusses the impact the role has had on him, pushing him to a breaking point.
Holland said, “I loved the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work; I’ve always lived by the idea that hard work is good work. I really enjoyed it, but at the same time, the series broke me.” The actor shared that at one point, he truly needed to step away due to the mentally exhausting role: “I disappeared. I went to Mexico for a week, spent time on a beach, and kept a low profile. And now I’m taking a year off, and that’s a result of how challenging this series was.” When asked about his plans for his sabbatical year, Holland said, “I’ve done some traveling. I had an amazing time. I’ve been seeing my family, hanging out with my friends. I’ve been playing golf. I’ve been going to the garden center, buying plants, and trying to keep them alive. I’ve just been trying to be a regular Kingston guy and relax.” The series was created by Akiva Goldsman and is now available on the streaming service.
