The hits that defined Britney Spears’ generation are coming to Broadway in the new musical “Once Upon a One More Time,” and it turns out she had a lot to do with it.
The 41-year-old pop star, known for “Toxic,” mentioned the show on opening night last week.
However, fans have been wondering exactly how much she was involved in the development of the project, which combines her catchy songs with classic fairy tales and feminism to weave a charming story.
Hunter Arnold, one of the show’s producers, revealed that Britney was quite involved in some key parts of the new musical.
In an interview with Variety, Hunter credited Britney for the development of the show.
“It was Britney who came to us and said, ‘We would like to have a show based on my music, and specifically not a jukebox musical,'” he explained. “The original idea came from ideas she presented: she loves fairy tales, princesses, storybooks.”
They worked to bring the show to where it is today, but Britney was involved throughout the process: “We made several attempts, didn’t get it right at first. Then we did a workshop after we put together the updated version, and she came to see it and give her feedback.”
Hunter added that Britney gave them something they really needed: creative freedom.
“Britney and her team gave us a lot of freedom to change lyrics here and there, to make sure things didn’t feel clumsy but intentional,” he said. “You don’t want to change too much because this is music that everyone loves; it’s a mix of art and science to make sure everything fits where it should.”
