Relive the past and uncover the origin of Mufasa in Disney’s prequel, featuring a stellar voice cast.

Thirty years after the original animated film debut of The Lion King, Disney is stepping back to tell the origin story of Mufasa.

Before perishing in his brother Scar’s plot to seize the throne for himself, Mufasa was the King of the Pride Lands and father to Simba. Mufasa: The Lion King serves as a prequel to the successful film, as well as a continuation of director Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake in 2019.

Mufasa will delve into the king’s early years in the Pride Lands, particularly his childhood and upbringing alongside Scar. The film will showcase the mandrill Rafiki narrating the story of Simba’s grandfather to his daughter, Kiara.

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins is at the helm of Mufasa, with most of the 2019 voice cast reprising their roles. John Kani voices Rafiki, Seth Rogen is Pumbaa, Billy Eichner is Timon, and Donald Glover is Simba. Beyoncé is set to return as Nala, with her daughter Blue Ivy Carter joining the cast as Kiara.

Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel Miranda is composing and writing the film’s soundtrack, and producing the music alongside Mark Mancina.
