Robert Pattinson leads Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi comedy set in an interplanetary future.

The actor stars Robert Pattinson in the new sci-fi film Mickey 17, directed by the acclaimed Bong Joon Ho, whose trailer has just been released. This marks the first collaboration between Pattinson and the South Korean director, best known for his work on Parasite (2019), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020.

Mickey 17 is based on the 2022 novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, and follows Mickey Barnes, played by Pattinson, an interplanetary colonist with a peculiar job: to undertake the most dangerous missions for his society, knowing he will be cloned each time he fails and dies. This plot gives Pattinson the chance to explore a nuanced role in a futuristic and challenging setting.

Although the trailer seems to suggest a light comedy, Bong is known for his films with deep social commentary, such as Parasite and Snowpiercer. With Mickey 17, the director takes his narrative style beyond Earth for the first time, into outer space.

The film is set to release on January 31, 2025, and tickets are expected to be available soon.
