Apple is reportedly developing a new affordable Mac, aimed at students and casual users, which could arrive by mid-2026.
According to Bloomberg, the tech giant is working on an entry-level laptop that could reshape the lower end of the notebook market. The project, internally identified as J700, is expected to be priced around $600, directly competing with Chromebooks and budget PCs designed for basic tasks, web browsing, document work and light editing. The goal: to attract students, businesses and users who want macOS without paying premium prices.
This new model would feature an iPhone-class processor instead of the traditional Mac chip range, alongside a more affordable LCD display to cut costs. Early testing reportedly shows that the chosen chip outperforms even the original M1, suggesting that the device won’t compromise the real-world user experience. The product targets those who view the iPad as their main option but prefer a traditional laptop form factor with a built-in keyboard.
Slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air, the new model is expected to offer extended battery life, full macOS functionality and a highly competitive price — all key factors in a market dominated by low-cost educational devices. The Mac J700 is currently in testing and early production stages with overseas suppliers, with a possible launch window during the first half of 2026.
Apple has not officially commented on the report.
