Billie Eilish is set to make her major move into cinema as the lead of ‘The Bell Jar’, the new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s novel directed by Sarah Polley.
Artist Billie Eilish, one of the most influential voices of her generation, is preparing to open a new chapter in her career. The singer and multiple GRAMMY Award winner will star in ‘The Bell Jar’, the upcoming film adaptation of the celebrated 1963 novel by Sylvia Plath, marking her first leading role in a feature film.
The project will be written and directed by filmmaker Sarah Polley, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Women Talking’. Polley will take on the challenge of bringing one of the most complex and influential works of twentieth-century literature to the big screen.
In the film, Billie Eilish will portray Esther Greenwood, a brilliant young student who begins to experience a profound emotional crisis while searching for her place in a society shaped by rigid expectations about women’s roles. The story follows her gradual descent into a mental health crisis as she confronts the social, cultural and personal pressures of her time.
Originally published under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas, ‘The Bell Jar’ is widely considered a semi-autobiographical work reflecting many of Sylvia Plath’s own experiences. The novel was released only a month before the author’s death and later became a literary reference point for discussions around identity, anxiety and the weight of social expectations.
Although this will be her first major film role, Billie Eilish previously explored acting with a brief appearance in the Prime Video series ‘Swarm’, where critics praised her unsettling and magnetic performance. This new project represents a far greater challenge, requiring her to embody one of the most complex female characters in modern literature.
The film will initially be produced by Joy Gorman Wettels, who developed the project before bringing major production companies such as Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal on board. According to reports from Variety, it has not yet been confirmed whether Eilish—who already holds two Academy Awards for original music—will also contribute to the film’s soundtrack.
As the project continues its development phase, the announcement has already generated strong anticipation among both film audiences and the singer’s global fanbase. With an artistic sensibility that has reshaped contemporary pop music, Billie Eilish’s transition into cinema could become one of the most talked-about creative moves of the coming years.
For now, Focus Features has not announced an official release date nor revealed any images from the production.
