Chris Hemsworth confesses his self-criticism regarding the excessive comedy in “Thor: Love and Thunder”, expressing a desire to explore more dramatic roles.
In his recent cover feature for Vanity Fair‘s May 2024 issue, Chris Hemsworth revealed his true thoughts on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.
When it premiered in 2022, the film marked Hemsworth’s fourth solo outing as the God of Thunder. In the interview, Hemsworth revealed feeling that Marvel fans deserved something better. He asserts that the movie was “too silly” because “I got carried away with improvisation and craziness, and I became a parody of myself.” Apparently still haunted by regrets, Hemsworth added, “I didn’t stick the landing properly.” He admitted that after portraying the character for so many years, he felt frustrated with it having starred in four solo Thor films plus the Avengers ones.
Hemsworth goes on to share, “Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team.” Feeling insecure about his role, he said, “I’d read everyone else’s lines and think, ‘Oh, they have much cooler stuff. They’re having more fun. What’s my character doing?’ It was always about ‘You’ve got the wig on. You’ve got the muscles. You’ve got the suit. Where’s the lighting?’ Yes, I’m part of this great thing, but I’m probably quite replaceable.” He tells the publication that he longed for more, wanting to work outside the action movie genre and make films with big names in the industry like Christopher Nolan, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg for more dramatic roles.
As for a potential Thor 5, Hemsworth says it’s currently “unpredictable.” He said, “I don’t want to keep doing it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me on screen as that character. If the audience wants to see it, and if there’s something we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I still don’t have the answer, but I’d love to try [to figure out] how we can do it again and keep it a bit unpredictable.”
