Daniel Brühl talks about playing Karl Lagerfeld in the Disney series ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’, exploring his complexity.

The Spanish-German actor Daniel Brühl delves into the iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld in Disney’s series ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’, based on the biography ‘Kaiser Karl’ by Raphaëlle Bacqué. Brühl, known for his versatility in acting, faces the challenge of exploring the complexity of the legendary German designer.

In an interview from Paris with WWD, Brühl shared his experience portraying Lagerfeld. “The danger is definitely there of making a fool of yourself,” he admitted about the monumental role. “But something in me said that this is such a fascinating, iconic, mysterious character that I simply want to play.”

The series, which focuses on the rivalry between Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent in the 70s, aims to show the man behind the legend. “We wanted to discover who the person was before he became the persona and before he became famous,” Brühl explained about the production’s approach.

Brühl, who also stars in the series in French in Paris, spoke about the authenticity of the production. “I wouldn’t have done it in English or in German, for some reason. I thought this was his preferred culture, this was his home. It just felt right to do it in French.”

The cast, including the talented Théodore Pellerin as Jacques de Bascher, provided a collaborative environment for Brühl. “What we did to each other was emotionally absolutely true. So we completely threw ourselves into it, there were no restrictions or containment,” he shared about his relationship with Pellerin.

The series also highlights Lagerfeld’s relationship with food, revealing his personal struggles. “As humans, we need to find ways to deal with that,” Brühl reflected on the use of food as a release for Lagerfeld.

With his commitment to authenticity and respect for Lagerfeld’s legacy, Brühl hopes to have captured the essence of the designer in ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’.
