The sunset on the Seine marked the beginning of the Pharrell Williams era at Louis Vuitton as the creative director of menswear.

The musician went all out, inviting friends including Beyoncé, Zendaya, Rihanna, Jared Leto, Kim Kardashian, and Lenny Kravitz to ensure everything went perfectly. Williams said the location, at the foot of the Vuitton headquarters in Paris, was “a very clear demonstration of love and warmth, well-being, and also of welcome.”

The main story was the Damier pattern. Williams has seen the future, and it’s pixelated. “With the Damier, naturally, it presents itself like a chessboard, so we used the chessboard squares as a sense of, like, pixelation, and we did everything from artistic motifs to one that I’m really proud of, which is Damoflage,” he said, referring to a motif that unifies heritage pattern with camouflage. “I’m super proud of how it comes alive across all the clothing and footwear, even on the trunks,” he added. “And this is going to be something that will come back. It will be seasonal in different expressions.”

Pixelated patterns appeared on items that included shorts suits worn with fisherman boots, workwear jackets with multiple pockets, a tapestry jacket, and an oversized fur stole. Coats featured an enlarged version of the classic Damier pattern, in yellow and black, or a graphic herringbone blanket motif.

Williams covered the entire range of men’s wardrobe, from checkerboard-printed denim to a luxurious cream-colored evening jacket. There were blinged-up suits with photographic prints of the Pont Neuf, and a chunky coat with a monogram motif.

“My team helps to contextualize, elevate, enrich, and even illuminate a concept with epic proportion. I’ll always shout out my team because they’re the best. If you see me and it seems like I’m floating, it’s them lifting me up,” Williams said.

In summary, it was a night of multiple entertainment, culminating in a live performance by Jay-Z, joined on stage by Williams.
