Donatella Versace steps down as creative director after nearly three decades, passing the reins to Dario Vitale. A new era begins for the iconic Italian fashion house.

After almost three decades at the helm of Versace’s creative direction, Donatella Versace has decided to step aside. At 69, she will assume the role of the brand’s chief ambassador next month, handing over the creative baton to Dario Vitale, a former designer at Miu Miu.

Born in 1983, Vitale is an Italian designer who graduated from the Istituto Marangoni in 2006. He began his career at Bottega Veneta and, in 2010, joined Miu Miu, where he rose to the position of ready-to-wear design director and brand image director.

Donatella’s departure coincides with speculation about the potential sale of Versace by Capri Holdings, which acquired the brand in 2018. Reports suggest that Prada is close to finalising a deal to purchase Versace for approximately €1.5 billion.

Donatella took over Versace’s creative leadership following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni in 1997. Under her direction, the brand became synonymous with luxury and extravagance, with iconic moments such as Jennifer Lopez’s jungle dress. In her final collection, presented at Milan Fashion Week, she paid tribute to Gianni’s legacy, showcasing the house’s signature baroque prints and vibrant designs.

The fashion industry now watches with anticipation as Vitale brings a fresh perspective to Versace’s rich heritage, while Donatella remains an iconic figure in her new role.
