The actress speaks candidly about her pain after ‘Harry Potter’, her retreat from acting, and her complicated relationship with author J.K. Rowling.

Emma Watson has opened her heart as never before. The British actress, who played Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter films, shared a deeply intimate testimony on the podcastOn Purpose with Jay Shetty. Through tears, Emma spoke of the emotional void she experienced after leaving the magical saga and how her natural sensitivity never quite fit into the competitive environments of the industry.

“I walked onto those sets with the expectation, carried over from Harry Potter, that people would feel like family to me, that we’d be lifelong friends,” she confessed. “But I discovered that many aren’t there for friendship, they’re there for the opportunity, for the role. And I didn’t have that mentality.” Her voice broke as she recalled what she’d lived through: “That rejection cut me deeply. It was a pain that breaks your bones. And yet I’m proud I felt it, because it means there’s still something inside me that can be broken. I have a heart that can hurt.”

With raw honesty, she added: “It was a hard lesson, but I’m proud I haven’t gone numb. I’d rather keep my humanity. I don’t have thick skin. Maybe I wasn’t made for those competitive environments. Yes, it broke me. Yes…”

But that wasn’t all. Watson also addressed her complicated relationship with J.K. Rowling, the author of the saga that changed her life, from whom she has distanced herself following Rowling’s controversial comments about trans people.

“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned,” Emma had declared back in 2020. And in this new conversation with Shetty, she returned to the subject: “I don’t believe that having lived that experience with Jo and having my own beliefs means I can’t continue to appreciate the person with whom I shared personal moments. I don’t think one cancels out the other.”

The actress regretted never having a direct conversation with Rowling: “I think what hurts me most is that the chance to talk about it never came,” she confessed. And with conviction, she added: “I’ll always be open to that dialogue. I deeply believe in it.”

About her retreat from acting, Watson said she feels happier and healthier than ever: “I miss acting, but I don’t miss having to promote films… That part was emotionally crushing,” she admitted, referring to the endless press tours. “I love art. I miss using my tools, but I needed to regain balance.”
