Hermès is facing lawsuits over alleged unfair business practices related to the sale of its iconic Birkin handbags.
The prestigious fashion brand Hermès is under public scrutiny due to accusations of unfair business practices linked to the sale of its coveted Birkin handbags, according to documents filed in class-action lawsuits.
Plaintiffs allege that Hermès imposes burdensome requirements on customers interested in purchasing a Birkin, demanding that they buy other products from the brand to gain access to the desired handbag. Additionally, it is noted that the company exercises selective control over who can purchase these luxury handbags.

On Tuesday, March 19th, two lawsuits were filed in California, arguing that Hermès’ practices violate US antitrust laws by exploiting its dominant position in the market.
Plaintiffs recount frustrating experiences where they are urged to purchase additional Hermès products before being able to obtain a Birkin, a process that can take years and require significant spending.
Despite the accusations, Hermès has categorically denied any wrongdoing in its business practices. The brand’s CEO, Axel Dumas, has previously stated that Hermès boutiques carefully select their customers and reserve the sale of sold-out handbags exclusively for genuine buyers.
