James Marsden reveals he misled fans about Avengers: Doomsday and confirms his return as Cyclops in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.

After weeks of speculation, James Marsden has finally come clean. The actor has publicly admitted that he lied about his involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, one of the most highly anticipated films in the Marvel universe.

He made the revelation during an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, where he not only confirmed his return as Cyclops, but also apologised for previously denying his participation in the project. “Yes, I lied. I was lying. I was being evasive,” he said with a laugh, making it clear that it was all part of a strategy to keep the secret under wraps.

According to Marsden, the decision was not entirely his own. “Marvel told me: ‘You can’t say anything.’ And I thought: ‘What if I say I’m not in the film?’… and they said: ‘Perfect.’” The admission highlights just how tightly controlled information is around major blockbuster productions.

The 52-year-old actor had already raised suspicions during a previous appearance on the show, where he denied any connection to the film. Now, with the secret largely out, he has chosen to be fully transparent with audiences.

His return as Cyclops marks one of the most talked-about moves within Marvel’s evolving direction, particularly at a time when the franchise is looking to reconnect with its most iconic characters.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’, set for release on 18 December 2026, is expected to feature an all-star cast, positioning it as one of the biggest cinematic events of the year.

Meanwhile, James Marsden continues to expand his presence on television, with upcoming roles in Season 2 of ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’ on Apple TV+ and the new instalment of ‘Paradise’ on Hulu. Beyond the anecdote, his confession sheds light on a familiar reality in Hollywood: sometimes, keeping a secret means telling a lie.
