Jonathan Bailey landed the role of Fiyero in ‘Wicked,’ beating out three former Disney stars and a prominent musician.
The competition for the role of Fiyero Tigelaar in the film adaptation of ‘Wicked’ was intense. Although the role ultimately went to Jonathan Bailey, known for his performance in ‘Bridgerton,’ several other talents also vied for the coveted part.
Among the contenders were three former Disney Channel stars. One of them was Nick Jonas, who, in addition to his successful music career, began his journey on Broadway with shows like ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Nick shared that he also auditioned alongside his brother Joe Jonas, who also tried for the role. Joe, known for his roles in the DCOMs ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,’ also has Broadway experience, having appeared in ‘La Bohème’ as a child.
Another former Disney star who auditioned was Ryan McCartan, who not only has experience in music and acting but also played Fiyero on Broadway in 2018 and 2019. Ryan humorously revealed on his podcast that although he gave it his all, he did not get the part but holds no grudges.
Additionally, singer Spencer Sutherland mentioned in March 2023 that he also received a call for the audition, though he ultimately did not land the role.
Undoubtedly, Jonathan Bailey’s casting as Fiyero highlights the high level of competition for this iconic character in the highly anticipated ‘Wicked’ movie.
