Aaron Taylor-Johnson fails to save ‘Kraven the Hunter’, which has disappointed with a mere $11 million opening and negative reviews.
‘Kraven the Hunter’, the new Marvel superhero spin-off produced by Sony Pictures and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has had a disastrous debut at the box office during its opening weekend.
Taylor-Johnson plays the iconic Spider-Man villain, but the film managed to gross only $11 million, falling well below expectations. These figures have earned it the title of the worst opening for a Sony-Marvel universe film. By comparison, Madame Web, which premiered earlier this year, achieved $15.3 million during its opening weekend.
Critics have also been harsh on ‘Kraven the Hunter’, which garnered a mere 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C” rating on CinemaScore—one of the lowest ratings in the franchise.
This was Sony’s third adaptation within the Spider-Man universe this year. In October, the studio released ‘Venom: The Last Dance’, starring Tom Hardy, with more favourable commercial results, though still below expectations. The streak of poor performances began with ‘Morbius’, starring Jared Leto, in 2022. The delay of ‘Kraven’ further increased its production costs to over $110 million.
The film faced stiff competition from major releases such as ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’, ‘Moana 2’, ‘Wicked’, and ‘Gladiator II’.
