The former One Direction member has opened up about the loss of Liam Payne, reflecting on their friendship and the void his passing left behind.

Almost a year after the death of Liam Payne, his former One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson has spoken for the first time about the profound impact the loss has had on his life. In an interview with Rolling Stone U.K., the 33-year-old singer reflected on the group’s 15th anniversary — a moment that, as he admitted, felt as emotional as it was painful.

“It was really uncomfortable, actually,” he confessed. “Because the collective feeling to celebrate is still as important, if not more, on behalf of Liam. There’s still a part of my head that feels it’s unfair and frustrating that he’s not with us anymore. All of that came back, although they’re emotions I live with every day.”

Tomlinson described the loss as “really, really, impossibly difficult,” acknowledging that he still struggles to process the absence of his friend.

During the conversation, he also fondly recalled Payne’s role within the band: “He was the safest pair of hands in the group. We were all really inexperienced, but he was exactly where he needed to be from his first audition on The X Factor. None of us would have admitted it then, because we were young and proud, but we all admired him.”

The interview, published just days before the first anniversary of Liam’s death — which occurred on 16 October 2024 — has moved fans around the world, who continue to remember him as one of the most beloved voices of his generation.
