Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reunite in a Miami-set thriller exploring corruption, loyalty and greed in Netflix’s next major release.

Netflix has officially announced that ‘The Rip’, a tense crime thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, will premiere globally on 16 January 2026. Directed and written by Joe Carnahan, the film is a joint production between Netflix and Artists Equity, the production company founded by Damon and Affleck in 2022.

The narrative centres on a team of Miami police officers who stumble upon a hidden stash house loaded with millions in cash. What initially seems like an unexpected windfall quickly spirals into a crisis of loyalty, as trust within the unit begins to fracture. With pressure mounting and external threats closing in, each character must confront the moral weight of their choices—proving that greed, once awakened, can be dangerously infectious.

The project also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler, rounding out a diverse ensemble cast. Shot against the electric backdrop of Miami, ‘The Rip’ promises both visual intensity and emotional depth, with Carnahan’s signature flair for taut, character-driven narratives at the helm.

Produced by Damon, Affleck, Dani Bernfeld, and Luciana Damon, the film reflects Artists Equity’s mission to grant creative voices more influence in the filmmaking process. According to reports, Damon discovered the script and immediately brought it to Affleck, whose involvement came swiftly after reading it. The project aligns with the duo’s vision of maintaining full creative control over their collaborative works.

At a Netflix Special Presentation earlier this year, Affleck described the film as “a gripping ride that explores the grey areas of morality and the consequences of desperation.” With its sharp tension, moral ambiguity, and emotionally layered characters, ‘The Rip’ is poised to become one of Netflix’s major releases of 2026.
