Michael B. Jordan wins the Actor Award for Best Leading Performance for ‘Sinners’, delivering a surprise victory that reshapes the awards season and positions him as a serious Oscar contender.

Awards season has just taken an unexpected turn. Michael B. Jordan claimed the Actor Award for Best Actor for his performance in ‘Sinners’, a win that significantly alters the balance of the Oscar race.

Taking to the stage at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the actor reacted with visible shock: “I did not expect this at all.” The moment was charged with emotion even before his speech began, as Viola Davis, who presented the award, shouted his name with enthusiasm upon opening the envelope.

In the film, a supernatural thriller set in the 1930s, Michael B. Jordan portrays twin brothers Smoke and Stack, two war veterans who return to the American South after the First World War and open a music venue that soon becomes the centre of a vampiric threat. The dual role became the cornerstone of his critical acclaim.

The night did not end there. The actor returned to the stage after ‘Sinners’ also won Best Ensemble Cast, marking his second collective victory at these awards following ‘Black Panther’ in 2019.

During his speech, he reflected on his early career and the dream he once held: “It was a club I desperately wanted to be part of.” He was referring to the actors’ union he had long aspired to join. “I remember watching the actors I respected being part of that community and thinking: one day I want to be up there in a suit holding an award.” He added, visibly moved: “That kid from New Jersey is here tonight.”

He also paid tribute to his mother, recalling family sacrifices: “Thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn’t have money for the tunnel, when we were looking for petrol and parking just to get me to auditions.”

His victory was especially surprising given he was competing against names such as Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke and Jesse Plemons, and had not previously secured major wins this season. Still, he emphasised respect for his peers: “I feel honoured and privileged to be nominated alongside actors and people I admire. I love your work and what you bring to our craft.”

‘Sinners’, directed by Ryan Coogler, marks their fifth collaboration following ‘Fruitvale Station’, ‘Creed’ and the two ‘Black Panther’ films. The film has earned 16 Oscar nominations and grossed over 369 million dollars worldwide.

Before closing, Jordan thanked Coogler directly: “Thank you, Ryan, for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do, for creating a safe space to find the truth.” He concluded, looking across the room: “Being in this room with people who have seen me grow… I feel your support. It’s incredible.”
