Miley Cyrus unveils ‘Secrets’, a track written for her father Billy Ray, with lyrics filled with forgiveness and family reconciliation.

Miley Cyrus has released ‘Secrets’, an unreleased song included in the deluxe edition of her latest album, Something Beautiful. Co-written with Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac, the song emerges as an offering of reconciliation towards her father, fellow musician Billy Ray Cyrus.

“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same,” Miley wrote on Instagram announcing the release.

Speaking on Monica Lewinsky’s podcast Reclaiming, the singer shared the emotional background of the track: “I wanted my dad to feel that I was a safe place. Even if they were difficult secrets, I wanted him to know he could tell me. I always wanted to be that white flag my family could turn to.”

‘Secrets’ opens with poetic verses such as “Secrets, I wanna keep your secrets / Like sunlight in the shadows / Like footsteps in the grass…” before moving into a chorus brimming with vulnerability: “Hero / Can I be your hero? / Call off all your forces / A white flag in the war.”

The relationship between Miley and her father has faced moments of distance in recent years, particularly after her parents’ separation, but according to the artist herself, they have managed to rebuild a healthy bond. ‘Secrets’ thus becomes a sonic bridge between past and present, where forgiveness takes centre stage.
