Miley Cyrus is facing a lawsuit for plagiarism, accused of copying Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ in ‘Flowers’.
Miley Cyrus has been sued for alleged plagiarism related to her 2023 hit ‘Flowers,’ which won a Grammy. The lawsuit was filed by Tempo Music Investments, who claim that Cyrus copied Bruno Mars’ song ‘When I Was Your Man,’ released in 2013. Despite this, Bruno Mars is not a party to the lawsuit nor has he been mentioned as a plaintiff.
According to Vulture‘s report, the lawsuit focuses on the lyrical similarities between the two songs. In ‘When I Was Your Man,’ Mars sings: “I shoulda bought you flowers, and held your hand” and “Take you to every party, ’cause all you wanted to do was dance.” In response, Cyrus in ‘Flowers’ sings: “I can buy myself flowers” and “I can take myself dancing, and I can hold my own hand.” Additionally, the claim includes the allegation that the melodies, harmonies, and choruses are similar.
The lawsuit also mentions that the chorus of ‘Flowers’ starts and ends with the same chords as ‘When I Was Your Man.’ Tempo Music Investments is seeking monetary compensation and asking that Cyrus cease playing and distributing her song.
The trial is still pending, and it remains to be seen how the case will be evaluated by a judge.
