The infamous clown Pennywise is back to spread fear on screen in Welcome to Derry, the new prequel series to the It saga, arriving this autumn on HBO Max.
The production is set 27 years before the events of the films directed by Andy Muschietti, which were adaptations of Stephen King’s novel.
The story delves into the earlier wave of terror preceding the films, when the malevolent entity known as It stalks and feeds on children before going into hibernation for nearly three decades. Bill Skarsgård reprises his iconic role as Pennywise, joined by a cast including Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and Madeleine Stowe, among others.
Creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti reveal that the series explores previously untold aspects, including the interlude stories of Mike Hanlon, which reflect his research and interviews with the elderly residents of the fictional town of Derry. The plot also tackles themes such as friendship, loss, and the power of fear as a weapon—resonating with modern-day concerns.
Welcome to Derry is a joint production between HBO and Warner Bros. Television, with Jason Fuchs serving as showrunner and writer of the pilot episode.
