The Pre-Fall 2024 collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior pays homage to New York with iconic silhouettes and feminine audacity.

Presented in New York City, Maria Grazia Chiuri‘s Pre-Fall 2024 collection for Dior is a tribute to the city, symbolized by the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France in the 19th century. This thematic nod is the focus of the collection, with key prints of the statue and the Eiffel Tower appearing on numerous pieces, symbolizing a dialogue between these two fashion capitals, as recounted in Christian Dior’s autobiography.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary Marlene Dietrich, known for her distinctive charisma and anti-fashion attitudes, Chiuri infuses Dior’s classic silhouettes with the bold spirit of the actress. This season, Dior’s garments embrace a variety of tweeds inspired by menswear, a material traditionally reserved for English gentlemen’s attire but reimagined here in lighter and diverse forms, as described in Dior’s “Petit Dictionnaire de la Mode.” The collection plays with traditional gender norms in fashion, presenting masculine-cut suits that support a woman’s right to dress as she pleases, whether with a tie or a sleeveless vest.

The range extends beyond androgynous pieces towards luxurious femininity in the form of delicate dresses reminiscent of 1940s lingerie, crafted from fabrics such as hammered satin, crushed velvet, and crepe. These are paired with oversized coats lined with lace details and quilted nylon featuring the cannage pattern, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. Embroidery throughout the collection draws inspiration from Dior’s iconography, including motifs such as the star, the lily of the valley, the clover, and the bee.
