Esteemed American actress and producer, Sigourney Weaver, was celebrated at the recent Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, held in Valladolid two days ago. The Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain bestowed upon her the prestigious International Goya in recognition of her illustrious career.

The Goya Award jury specifically highlighted Weaver’s “impressive career full of unforgettable films” and her dedication to creating “independent, complex, and strong female characters.” The International Goya, established in 2022, aims to honor those who contribute to the global unity of cultures through cinema.

Weaver, known for iconic roles in the Alien saga and ‘Gorillas in the Mist,’ is a three-time Oscar nominee, BAFTA, and Golden Globe winner. The jury acknowledged her versatility, charisma, and undeniable talent, stating that she has “captivated audiences as one of the most beloved performers globally.”

With strong ties to Spanish cinema, Weaver featured prominently in the 2021 San Sebastian Festival and collaborated with Spanish directors Rodrigo Cortés and J.A. Bayona. This recognition further solidifies Weaver’s impact on the international cinematic stage. The 38th Goya Awards ceremony was a night of celebration, with Spanish dramas ‘20,000 Species of Bees’ and ‘Society of the Snow’ leading nominations for Best Film.
