The actress and singer will share the screen with Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in an ambitious film exploring occultism, mysticism and 1970s America.
Selena Gomez continues to expand her Hollywood career with one of the most unexpected and ambitious projects of her trajectory. The artist is set to star in a new film directed by Brady Corbet alongside Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, creating one of the strongest casts currently attached to the independent film scene.
The news began generating international attention after Cate Blanchett herself revealed during a masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival that she was once again collaborating with Corbet, one of the most discussed filmmakers of recent years following the impact of ‘The Brutalist’.
Although very few official details about the plot have been revealed, the director previously described the project as a film that is “radically genre-defying”, shaped by themes connected to American mysticism, occultism and the spiritual belief systems that have crossed through American culture from the 19th century to the present day.
Much of the story will reportedly be set during the 1970s, a decade that plays a key role in both the visual and conceptual identity of the project. According to several industry reports, Brady Corbet aims to build a far more experimental and daring work, deliberately distancing himself from traditional Hollywood structures.
The production also stands out for its technical ambition. Corbet is reportedly shooting the film using extremely rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, a format historically associated with visually monumental productions and rarely used in contemporary cinema.
In addition, the screenplay is believed to be around 200 pages long, surpassing even the scale of ‘The Brutalist’, which reached a runtime of approximately three and a half hours.
For Selena Gomez, the project marks another major shift within an especially strong artistic period. In recent years, the actress has increasingly moved towards more auteur-driven and emotionally complex productions, gradually stepping away from the youthful image associated with her Disney Channel beginnings.
The artist has also recently wrapped filming on the final event for ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’, where she is set to make her directorial debut, further confirming a creative evolution that extends far beyond music and traditional acting.
