Marvel previews a series that blends Hollywood satire, latent superpowers and institutional chaos, with a struggling actor as an unlikely hero.
Marvel Television kicks off the year by unveiling a new trailer for Wonder Man, one of its most anticipated upcoming series. Promising a mix of superpowers, Hollywood satire and the trademark chaos of the Marvel universe, the footage offers the first clear look at the protagonist’s hidden abilities and the far-reaching consequences of their awakening.
The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a struggling actor fighting for his big break in the film industry. His life takes an unexpected turn after an encounter with Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley, who connects him to an ambitious project: a remake of a superhero film directed by the eccentric Von Kovak. What begins as a sharp satire of the entertainment world quickly escalates into something far more dangerous.
The new trailer makes it clear that Simon Williams is no ordinary civilian. His latent superpowers begin to surface uncontrollably, placing him squarely on the radar of Damage Control, the government agency tasked with managing the fallout from superhero-related incidents. From that point on, the series moves into territory where identity, ambition and power collide with an institutional machine that leaves no room for error.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wonder Man adopts a distinctly different tone within the Marvel Television catalogue, exploring the more ironic underside of stardom and superhero mythology. The series will consist of eight episodes and is set to premiere on 27 January on Disney+.
With this first glimpse, Wonder Man is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most singular television offerings: a story about failure, success and hidden power, where the greatest enemy is not always the villain, but the cost of becoming extraordinary within a system that devours its own stars.
