The Dark Mark has yet to be officially summoned, but rumours are already spreading through the wizarding world

HBO’s highly anticipated ‘Harry Potter’ series, scheduled to premiere in 2027, is moving steadily forward — yet one of its most crucial secrets remains closely guarded: who will step into the role of Lord Voldemort, the most feared dark wizard in Harry Potter lore. As the core cast begins to take shape, the identity of the new adult Tom Riddle continues to fuel intense speculation among fans.

In the original film saga, the character was portrayed by different actors depending on his stage of life. In ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, Richard Bremmer and Ian Hart embodied fragmented, spectral versions of the villain. From ‘The Goblet of Fire’ onwards, Ralph Fiennes assumed the role, delivering an interpretation that has since become iconic and remained definitive through ‘The Deathly Hallows – Part 2’.

So far, HBO has not confirmed who will inherit that legacy in the television adaptation. Nevertheless, rumours have been quick to surface. The name gaining the most traction in recent weeks is Cillian Murphy, the Academy Award winner for ‘Oppenheimer’, widely admired for his unsettling on-screen magnetism.

Speculation intensified after Ralph Fiennes himself mentioned Murphy during a red carpet appearance. “I think Cillian Murphy is a very interesting choice,” he remarked, briefly suggesting — at least to some — that the role might already be cast. Shortly afterwards, it was clarified that there is no official confirmation, leaving the question hanging in the air: a genuine slip, or simply a personal opinion?

The connection between the two actors is not insignificant. Fiennes and Murphy are both part of the cast of ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’, a detail that has further fuelled theories about potential behind-the-scenes discussions. Even so, the network has maintained complete silence on the matter.

Beyond the adult incarnation of Voldemort, the series will also require new actors to portray younger versions of Tom Riddle, particularly in seasons inspired by ‘The Chamber of Secrets’ and ‘The Half-Blood Prince’. In the films, those roles were memorably played by Christian Coulson and Hero Fiennes Tiffin — the latter being Ralph Fiennes’ nephew.

For now, the central question remains unanswered. The series has yet to reveal who will bear the Dark Mark, but all signs point to the announcement becoming one of the most talked-about moments on the road to ‘Harry Potter’’s return to the screen. Until then, the mystery — as with all great magic — remains part of the spell.
