Actor Billy Porter recalls his dramatic battle with sepsis, a medical emergency that left him in a coma and close to death.
Actor and singer Billy Porter, winner of Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards, has shared one of the most shocking episodes of his life while reflecting on the serious health crisis he experienced in 2024. In a recent interview, the 56-year-old artist spoke openly about the ordeal that nearly cost him his life after developing a dangerous case of sepsis, an infection that rapidly spread through his body.
The incident occurred in September 2024, when Porter was forced to temporarily step away from his role as the Emcee in the Broadway musical ‘Cabaret’. What initially appeared to be a routine medical check quickly turned into a critical situation when doctors discovered that the actor had a kidney stone lodged in his urethra, which triggered a severe infection.
According to Billy Porter, the infection escalated quickly and developed into urosepsis, a form of sepsis that begins in the urinary tract and can spread to the kidneys and other vital organs. The progression was so rapid that doctors had to intervene immediately in an effort to save his life.
The situation reached an extreme point when the actor fell into a coma and was connected to an ECMO machine, a form of life support that oxygenates the blood when the body’s organs can no longer function properly on their own. During this critical period, Porter says he was clinically dead for several days.
The artist explained that once doctors managed to stabilise him, they discovered the infection had also caused compartment syndrome in one of his legs. This condition occurs when pressure builds inside the muscle and restricts oxygen flow, potentially leading to irreversible damage.
To save his leg, surgeons were forced to perform an extremely aggressive procedure while the actor remained unconscious. Doctors opened the leg from the knee to the hip and left the wound open for several days in order to relieve the pressure and prevent tissue death.
Despite the severity of the situation, Billy Porter ultimately made a full recovery, something he describes as nothing short of a miracle. The actor has said the experience profoundly changed his outlook on life.
While recovering in hospital, Porter reflected on several lessons he now considers essential. Among them were the importance of working smarter, listening to one’s life purpose, and always maintaining personal honesty—values he now intends to apply across every aspect of his career and life.
Today, the artist says he feels deeply grateful to have survived such a life-threatening experience. For Billy Porter, still being here represents not only a second chance, but also a constant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of embracing every moment.
