Katy Perry sings in space during Blue Origin’s historic all-female mission – a brief flight that marked an inspiring milestone.
Katy Perry has just made history by becoming the first artist to sing in space, accompanied by an all-female crew on Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission. The flight, which launched from Texas on Monday morning, marked the first expedition made up solely of women in over six decades.
The star-studded crew included Lauren Sanchez, author and partner of Jeff Bezos; journalist Gayle King; activist Amanda Nguyen; former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe; and producer Kerianne Flynn.
During the just-over-ten-minute journey, the passengers experienced four minutes of weightlessness as they passed the Kármán line. It was at that moment that Perry sang ‘What a Wonderful World’, a gesture which she explained represented “a collective energy” and “the gratitude of seeing our planet from a new perspective”.
Oprah Winfrey, who encouraged King to take part, celebrated the moment: “There’s only one first time, and this was hers.”
With this brief but emotional flight, Blue Origin once again sends not just technology into orbit, but also inspiration.
