Prada FW26 explores female identity through the art of layering

The Prada Autumn/Winter 2026 womenswear collection, designed by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, transforms the layering of garments into a manifesto on identity, memory and transformation.

Inside the Deposito at Fondazione Prada, the Italian house unveiled its FW26 womenswear proposal, a collection that examines how clothing reflects the multiple realities shaping women’s lives. More than a conventional runway show, the presentation functioned as a reflection on the construction of identity over time. Fifteen women formed a defined cast, with each look revealing a progressive transformation shaped by layering, structure and material treatment.

Layering stood at the core of every silhouette. Structured tailoring appeared over sportswear, while embroidered satin dresses emerged beneath minimalist outer layers. There was no hierarchy between the formal and the informal; both dimensions coexisted in balance. Jackets revealing inner dresses, skirts exposing hidden fragments and coats hinting at underlying layers created compositions that connected past and present. The proposal suggests that clothing is not static, but a living archive of experience.

Material treatment reinforced this narrative. Intentionally faded surfaces, embroidery with an aged appearance and visible seams highlighted the passage of time. Prada FW26 incorporated archival references into contemporary pieces, embedding dresses within streamlined outer forms. This technique generated garments with internal histories, perceptible through subtle distortions and layered textures. The collection explores how memory becomes physically inscribed in fabric.

Proportion played an essential role. Clean lines contrasted with fractured edges and interrupted surfaces. Tailored forms maintained clarity while allowing inner layers to remain exposed. This gesture suggests garments in transition, reshaped through daily use. The collection questions how clothing shifts function between private and public spheres.

The exhibition setting amplified the concept. The Deposito housed objects spanning five centuries — tapestries, paintings, mirrors and historic furniture — creating a dialogue between fashion and art. Each element carried its own history, reinforcing the idea of accumulation and reinterpretation.

With Prada Fall Winter 2026, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons consolidate a vision of fashion as a continuous process. Layers do not simply construct volume; they construct identity.
