Selena Gomez defies conventions by attending her ex’s wedding in a stylish black outfit, challenging superstitions.

When it comes to weddings, a celebration of love and life, ancient wisdom would interpret the act of wearing black—the color of death, mourning, and despair—as a tacit statement of disapproval. It would be an invocation of misery, akin to announcing to the universe, “I care not for the romantic fate of this couple.”

But we are no longer in the Victorian era, and Selena Gomez attended the wedding of her ex-boyfriend, Samuel Krost, the talent contractor for Fyre Festival, from head to toe in black: a watery silk dress paired with Jimmy Choo stiletto heels and the crystal-encrusted Miracle bag from Aupen.

If anything, Gomez was solidifying a contemporary tradition established by celebrities like Zoë Kravitz and Kendall Jenner, who wore Little Black Dresses to the weddings of Margaret Qualley and Lauren Perez, while each of Sofia Richie’s bridesmaids donned black dresses. If Gomez aimed to mock superstition, she could have gone for a literal wedding dress. Much like Nicki Minaj, Maude Apatow, Chloe Cherry, and Julia Fox, all of whom have graced the red carpet looking, according to some, like vengeful spinsters from the 19th century.
