Shawn Mendes confesses his anxiety in pursuit of musical perfection. He shares an intimate video of himself singing to alleviate the pressure.
Shawn Mendes opened up about the struggle for musical perfection in a black-and-white video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, January 2nd. Seated at his piano, the 25-year-old musician reflected on his experiences over the past year and how he faced moments of “extreme anxiety.”
In the video, Mendes, sporting a scruffy beard and tousled hair, revealed that during times of extreme anxiety, he found solace in sitting at his piano and singing without the pursuit of perfection. Though initially challenging to sing without the need for perfection, he eventually fell in love with the dance between ‘correct’ and ‘incorrect’ notes.
“I realized I only experienced moments of bliss and euphoria with the ‘correct’ notes because of the ‘incorrect’ ones. The reason I can sing in tune is because I learned to listen,” he shared.
During this impromptu moment, Mendes sang, “You were there for me… to help me.” He also reflected on the year 2023, emphasizing the importance of accepting life’s downs and learning to listen in those moments.
The singer has been open about his struggles with mental health. In July 2022, he postponed dates of his Wonder tour due to exhaustion. Although he initially hoped to resume the tour, he eventually canceled it to prioritize his health.
In February 2023, Mendes spoke with WSJ. Magazine about the decision, stating that it was the right one. He thanked those who supported him and promised to return after taking the necessary time to heal.
Despite canceling the tour, Mendes assured fans that he will continue making music and looks forward to meeting them on future tours. His latest album, “Wonder,” released in 2020, includes hits like “Monster,” his collaboration with Justin Bieber. Mendes also briefly reunited with his ex, Camila Cabello, at Coachella in April 2023, before their relationship ended in June.
