Apple TV+ Unveils the Trailer for ‘Masters of the Air,’ Spielberg’s New WWII Pilot Drama
The nine-part limited series serves as the follow-up to ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific,’ slated for an early January premiere next year. This aerial drama reunites Spielberg with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Goetzman previously produced ‘Band of Brothers’ in 2001 and ‘The Pacific’ in 2010. Penned by John Orloff, the limited series also boasts episodes directed by renowned talents such as Cary Joji Fukunaga, Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Dee Rees, and Tim Van Patten.
The trailer provides viewers with a glimpse of characters played by Butler and Keoghan navigating the skies as American pilots. Tasked with joining a special group gearing up to enter ‘directly into Hitler’s territory,’ the preview hints at an action-packed plot featuring explosions, aerial combat, and plane crashes. Towards the end of the trailer, Butler’s character, Major Gale Cleven, declares, ‘We won’t surrender without a fight.’ The synopsis states, ‘Portraying the psychological and emotional toll paid by these young individuals as they helped destroy Hitler’s Third Reich horror is at the heart of ‘Masters of the Air.’ Regardless of individual fates, all paid a price.’
Based on a true story and Donald L. Miller’s novel of the same name, the storyline follows the 100th Bombardment Group, also known as the ‘Bloody Hundredth.’ In the narrative, the ‘Bloody Hundredth’ were aviators conducting bombing raids over Nazi Germany in the risky conditions of World War II. Other actors involved in the series include Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa.
‘Masters of the Air’ premieres on Apple TV+ on January 26, 2023.
