Katie Holmes has redefined casual style with a peculiar twist, standing out with eclectic yet elegant outfits at every appearance.

From elfish loafers to metallic wedges, square-toed ballet flats, and optic white cowboy boots, Katie Holmes has spent the past 12 months shaping her image around the phrase “casual with a quirky touch.” Who else would arrive at the Madison Square Garden for the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball awards in a deep blue, strapless minidress worn over jeans? Who else would sport a chessboard jacket (as she did yesterday afternoon) with structured trims along the shoulders?

Holmes paired that Dries Van Noten piece with straight-leg jeans, Gucci loafers, and a well-worn Mansur Gavriel tote bag while strolling through Manhattan, which, if we infer from the countless paparazzi photos, has become her favorite pastime. It’s a default (but not boring) outfit for Holmes: from afar, everything seems quite modest and approachable, but up close, there are small eccentricities that subtly telegraph deviations in taste. This girl has become the common Hollywood woman, who could probably convince an entire generation of women to invest in the smallest kitten heels known to man. For Holmes’ die-hard fans, and the publicists who thank her for keeping their brands in business, this look will be welcomed as an obvious expression of her fashion template, something that has been engineered by stylist Brie Welch. There’s a reason why pop culture remains captivated by every paparazzi walk of Holmes, and there’s a reason why style writers have established an ongoing list of the actress’s coats: ranging from Crombies, The Frankie Shops camels, to Shoreditch Ski Club‘s dungarees. Find a girl who can do both. Or, in Holmes’ case, a girl who can make almost everything seem desirable.
